How to plan a secret proposal photography session

Some people just LOVE photos and value the memories they bring. For this reason, it's getting more and more popular for people to hire a professional photographer to capture the moment they pop the question and get engaged.

If you think your partner is one of these people and you think they will be really surprised by your proposal, one way of capturing this moment is during a photo shoot. Like any proposal plan though, you have to be super secretive and make sure your partner doesn't suspect a thing!

How it works

If you were to just suggest having a portrait photography session together, they might become a bit suspicious so you could plan it for a big celebration such as valentine's day, a birthday/anniversary. Alternatively, you could have a larger family portrait session (with someone else in the family suggesting it to your partner).

Before the session your photographer will explain how it will work. When they say a specific word/phrase or guide you both into a specific pose, that will be your cue to get into position. After that, your photographer will step back and photograph what unfolds without interference. Top tip: It's best if you stay down on your knee for longer than feels comfortable to ensure you get loads of amazing photos.

Advantages of proposing during a scheduled session:

  • Your partner is already dressed up and photo ready, rather than caught off guard with their hair a mess.

  • Sharing the organisation with the photographer will help you feel less stressed about it all - share the secretive burden!

  • Receive beautiful, natural photos of this most special occasion and celebrate it straight away with lots of gorgeous portraits.

  • Proposal photography sessions are still relatively new around here so it's possibly a very unique way of proposing.

If this is something you’re interested in doing in Colchester or Ipswich, we’d love to hear your ideas.
