The 'first look' photo has become a cherished tradition in modern weddings, capturing the raw emotion and anticipation as the couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day. Originating in America, the trend has made it's way to the UK where it is gaining popularity.
If you're committed to tradition and prefer not to see each other until you walk down the aisle, the concept of a 'first look' may not be for you. However, for some couples there are undeniable advantages to considering this option; opting for a 'first look' allows you to capture some portraits while you're looking your absolute best, and it saves time after the ceremony in which you can spend precious moments with your guests. If like me, you're hesitant about seeing the groom before the ceremony, there are alternative 'first look' options to consider, such as sharing a special moment with your father, bridesmaids, or even your brother.
First look with your Dad
Following the trend of the 'first look' photo, many brides are also choosing to share this special moment with their fathers before the ceremony. As the father sees his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time, it's a poignant moment filled with love and pride, creating timeless memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
This can take place in the room you are getting ready in, outside in the garden, or even by the car - wherever is most appropriate for your timeline and location.
First look with your bridesmaids
Another heartwarming variation of the 'first look' photo involves the bride sharing a private moment with her bridesmaids. With the bridesmaids standing in a line with their eyes closed in anticipation, the bride approaches and the countdown begins. This intimate exchange captures the bond between the bride and her closest friends, as they share in the excitement and emotion of the day together.
Of course, to make this work, you need to ensure your bridesmaids don't see your dress or vital details beforehand to make the final look a surprise and extra exciting.
First look with your groom
The pinnacle of the 'first look' experience often occurs between the bride and groom themselves. Usually positioned outside, the groom stands with his back to the bride, eagerly awaiting her arrival. As she approaches, a mix of nerves and excitement fills the air. When the groom turns around to see his bride for the first time, it's a magical moment that epitomises the essence of the day. This is then followed by a few couple portraits.
While it may seem staged and artificial—because, well, it is— the 'first look' moment often unfolds organically on its own. Putting a little bit of thought and planning in simply ensures the moment occurs in a picturesque setting with optimal lighting, allowing us to capture the most stunning photos possible.
