The oldest record town in Britain

Colchester is full of history - everywhere you turn you will find an ancient ruin or an old building with an incredible story behind it. For those of you who want to incorporate a bit of our town’s history into your wedding, we thought we would make a list of some of our top historic wedding venues in Colchester. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just a few of our favourites…

Colchester Town Hall

The building we know as the Town Hall was opened in 1902 but the site has been used as a meeting hall or ‘moot hall’ since 1277. The great thing about Colchester Town Hall is that you have multiple rooms to choose from to accommodate a variety of wedding sizes and budgets. The walls are adorned with portraits from people through history and up until the modern day, telling the story of the town. On the top floor stands The Moot Hall which is large, grand and spectacular; the windows are magnificent and the decor impressive. If you’re considering a town center wedding see our full review of Colchester Town Hall.

Colchester Castle

If you're looking for history, you can't get much better than Colchester Castle itself. Built upon the foundations of a Roman Temple, this Norman Castle is the largest example of its kind anywhere in Europe, still mostly intact. We have photographed weddings in The Chapel room as well as on the roof - it can cater for all weddings, big and small. This wedding venue is set in the grounds of Colchester Castle Park so there are large grounds to explore for your portraits. If you’re dreaming of getting married in a castle, take a look at our full review of Colchester Castle.

Layer Marney Tower

Set in acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, Layer Marney Tower has a rich history but also works well for modern weddings. Between the architecture, decor and grounds there are countless spots to pose for the perfect portrait. If you’re looking for a grand, impressive, stylish day, then look no further. All of these wedding venues are excellent. We would highly recommend going and viewing them, especially during an open day when they are dressed for a wedding so you can see the potential they offer. If you need a photographer for your wedding at any one of these local settings, we have lots of experience and are familiar with each of them.
