Real wedding at Layer Marney Tower, Colchester
I had met these two a year previous for their engagement portraits at Cudmore Grove on Mersea Island. We had a fabulous time strolling round, having a laugh and creating beautiful portraits for them to remember this magical time in their life. It also helped them feel more relaxed and prepared for their wedding photos.
Layer Marney is no doubt a remarkable wedding venue in Colchester, full of history and grandeur. Our couple chose to make use of the traditional English church on site for their wedding ceremony. This church is amazing for photography by the way! The service was lead by their friend and they even had some friends provide live music to accompany the hymns.

They were very lucky to have such brilliant sunshine for their March wedding, which always puts everyone in a good mood! Although it’s challenging working with such strong sunlight in the middle of the day, we were able to capture a variety of natural and romantic portraits for these two newly-weds.
The grounds at Layer Marney are a photographers dream- in every direction you turn are amazing views - and of course the historic towers themselves form a dramatic backdrop for portraits.
Wedding reception
Moving inside to the long gallery, they had chosen to decorate the wedding tables with a Lord of the Rings theme. A few of the details were completely lost on me, like the dressed up rubber ducks!?? but it’s items like this that make a wedding unique, personal and sentimental.
The speeches were the right amount of hilarious and embarrassing. We love this part of the day as we get to know the couple even more, through the eyes of their friends and family. We can’t help but share in the laughter and the tears ourselves! As it was getting dark by this time, being March, flashes were required to maintain the clean and crisp style of photography we aim for, while still keeping a natural finish to the photos.
At Layer Marney Tower you have your pick of rooms so this couple chose to have their evening reception in the barn. The cake was simple and elegant with blue icing flowers cascading down the tiers and the live band provided a great atmosphere for the evening celebrations.
