8 seriously useful wedding tips

mature bride and groom holding hands

Having been around so many weddings, we’ve started to see the same issues crop up time and time again, so we are here to impart our wedding day wisdom. It’s often the little things that are easily forgotten or not even thought of that can make a big difference to the way your day runs and how stressed (or not) you feel.

Wedding tip #1

Have a second pair of shoes for the evening

Speaking from personal experience here, if you’re not used to wearing high heels, don’t feel you have to wear them for your whole wedding day. Your second pair for the evening doesn’t have to be flats if you're worried about tripping on your long dress, but just a lower heel and different shoe will help your feet not feel so sore and you can keep on dancing through the night.

Wedding tip #2

Get your engagement ring cleaned before your wedding

If you have been engaged for a year or so before your wedding, chances are your engagement ring has lost it’s shine slightly. It might not be too noticeable on your hand but sitting next to your brand-new wedding ring for a cute photograph, it could look a little dull. By simply getting it cleaned before the big day, all your jewels will be sparkling for their big picture. Note, if you’re sending it off to get professionally cleaned, do this a few weeks before your wedding date. You don’t need the stress a couple of days before when you still haven’t received it back!

Bride and two bridesmaids wearing wedding robes

Wedding tip #3

Wear a robe while getting ready

Have you ever wondered why so many brides wear robes while getting ready? Of course, they make for excellent photo opportunities with the bridesmaids in matching robes but there is a more practical reason behind it. By wearing a robe or button-down shirt you don't have to pull a top over your head once your hair and makeup are done. Also, it’s best not to wear socks or a bra because these can leave marks on your skin that might be visible once your dress is on.

Wedding tip #4

Have little scissors and a sewing kit to hand

Perhaps delegate this job to your mum or bridesmaid and ask them to bring a miniature sewing kit or something similar for any unexpected issues that may crop up. The chances are you won’t need it but it’s better to be prepared. Of all the wedding prep we have photographed, only a handful have needed last minute fixing of the dress or page boys’ trousers – this one being funny that his trousers were too long so they ended up just stapling the hem up!

Wedding Confetti Photograph

Wedding tip #5

Supply your own confetti

We love a confetti shot; the energy and the dynamic photos we can create. It’s impossible not to smile when throwing confetti! If doing confetti is important to you as well, don’t rely on your guests to bring it. Rather, we encourage you to supply it yourself to ensure you have enough for a fun photo. We actually have a whole article on confetti here.

Wedding tip #6

Time your portraits right

Avoid the harsh midday sun and schedule portraits and important photo opportunities for later in the afternoon. The most flattering and gorgeous light available is towards the evening. If your ceremony is early and therefore your portraits are too, we highly recommend scheduling another mini portrait session in the evening to ensure you get those natural, beautiful wedding photographs.

bridesmaids wedding bouquet

Wedding tip #7

Have your flower girl throw petals as she walks down the aisle

Traditionally the role of the flower girl is to throw petals as she walks down the aisle. However, lots of brides choose to just have them walk down with the bridesmaids. Of course, it is dependent on the rules of the church or venue, but by having something to do, your little flower girl will feel grown up and can focus on her task rather than being nervous about all the people. In theory, this will help her get down the aisle without getting too shy. Also, we can’t deny, it makes for the cutest photographs.

Wedding tip #8

Delegate tasks to your bridesmaids

Let your bridesmaids know ahead of time what you expect of them and what each of their roles are. There is a way to do this in a non-bridezilla way, and it helps alleviate stress on the day when everyone knows what to do. Some of your bridesmaids may have never been a bridesmaid before so simply let them know how they can be of most help to you.
